Non profits Caught in Economic Downturn
Summer, 2008
Due to the economic downturn, hospitals, colleges and other non profits are hurting because donations are decreasing while costs are increasing. As a result, the search for other streams of income is paramount. UAC helps fill that growing gap and improve the bottom line.
The latest victims of our sagging economy are charities. As many regular donors to charity watch their net worth evaporate, they curtail their philanthropic intentions. “And like every other industry, philanthropy is tethered directly to the health of the overall economy, and in particular to the health of the upper-middle-class consumer. If the past is any guide, it’s likely to be a lean year for nonprofits.” (“The Coming Charity Crisis ” by Daniel Gross, Newsweek, 6/16/08) “The level or diminished funding [of charitable gifts] has left some nonprofits scrambling to find funding elsewhere or perform the same duties with less while costs of almost everything rise.” (“Nonprofits scramble as donors cut funds” by Christina Sanchez, The Tennessean, 6/18/08). Charities are saying, ‘How can we do more with less?’ Increasing utility bills are an overwhelming expense for many, with no end in sight.
Not only are donors giving less, they are more discriminating about their donations. “Donors just want to make sure their investment is going to an organization that can do the right thing with it.” (“The Battle for the Nonprofit Dollar” by Pamela Gwyn Kripke, D Magazine, May, 2008). In other words, donors are demanding very astute fiscal responsibility in return for their gifts. They want to know that their money is being put to the best possible use.
In these frugal times, UAC stands out as a beacon of hope for non profits seeking to hold or improve their bottom line. UAC’s audit and tax recovery services, as well as the future savings created, all done with no out-of-pocket expense to the non profit, is like an oasis in the desert.
And to underscore UAC’s care and commitment to the non profits they serve, UAC gives a percentage of their recovery to that non profit as a donation.
