Byron Horner, UAC President
Telecom and Utility Tax Specialist & Social Entrepreneur
With more than 20 years' experience in state and federal tax issues, Byron Horner, president of UAC and former state tax auditor brings nonprofit accounting teams a unique blend of tax expertise and passion for helping to improve the bottom line
The story of UAC would not be complete without the history of how Byron came upon the business opportunity of recovering lost taxes. While working as a state tax auditor in Florida, Byron realized that hospitals and churches were overpaying hundreds of thousands of dollars to the state and IRS. As a state auditor, his hands were tied to reveal the situation or to help those nonprofits. Byron left that position and went to work for nonprofits by starting his own business, Utility Audit Company. Over the years Byron has continued strengthening his relationships with the IRS and state tax departments. He often has information long before it hits the press, let alone is distributed to the public.
Byron's passion for helping nonprofits, coupled with his extensive tax expertise, uniquely positions him as one of the few experts in the field of tax recovery with in-depth solutions. His experience working with state and federal taxing authorities provides him with a wealth of knowledge in the most effective ways of recovering misspent taxes for nonprofit charitable hospitals, colleges & universities, state & federal credit unions and other organizations.
In addition, the story cannot be fully understood until the bazaar Federal Excise Tax history is revealed. The tax was first imposed in 1898 because of revenue needs brought about by the Spanish-American War. Since that time the American people have struggled under the burden of this tax. Nonprofit organizations are not required to participate in this taxation – but often the tax slips in without being seen.

For the past 15 years Byron has been involved in the battle of Federal Excise Tax (FET) taxation on telecommunications as it has raged on. In May, 2006, the IRS finally ended the tax on long distance, wireless and bundled service. However, Federal Excise Tax still applies to local service.
Byron and the UAC team continue to find and recover that tax for their exempt clients.
Please contact Byron directly at UAC today to learn whether your organization qualifies for this extraordinary service.
